The city of Badajoz
Badajoz is the most populated city in the region of Extremadura and the most important from an economic point of view. It is placed in the southwest of Spain, very close to the border with Portugal. There is an extensive road infrastructure connecting Badajoz to other cities such as Seville (200 kms away), Madrid (400 kms) or Lisbon (200 kms).
Badajoz belongs to river basin of Guadiana, one of the most important rivers in the Iberian Peninsula, which flows through the city from east to west. The city has modern infrastructures, although it also has a beautiful historic center, where there are several constructions listed as buildings of artistic, historic and cultural interest such as the San Juan Bautista Cathedral, the Santo Domingo church, Puerta de Palmas or the Arabic Alcazaba, one of the largest in Europe. Moreover, the cities of Merida and Cáceres, both declared Patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO, are located less than an hour drive away from Badajoz.
The city has an airport situated only 14 kms away from the city center and a varied offer of accommodation options for all types of visitors. One of the major attractions is the gastronomic offer, in which products derived from Iberic pig have a main role, especially the famous ham from Extremadura and a wide range of cheeses and wines with designation of origin.
